
Rescue work underway after an aircraft carrying Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar crashed during landing, at Baramati in Pune district, Maharashtra, Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2026. Pawar, along with three others on board, was killed in the crash.

A chartered aircraft carrying NCP leader and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar overshot the runway while attempting to land at Baramati airport on Wednesday morning. According to official sources and initial reports, all the boarding passengers were reported dead.
The incident occurred when the aircraft was landing ahead of Pawar’s scheduled address at Zilla Parishad election rallies in the region.
Prime Minster Narendra Modi extended his condolences in a post on social media platform X: “Shri Ajit Pawar Ji was a leader of the people, having a strong grassroots level connect. He was widely respected as a hardworking personality at the forefront of serving the people of Maharashtra. His understanding of administrative matters and passion for empowering the poor and downtrodden were also noteworthy. His untimely demise is very shocking and saddening. Condolences to his family and countless admirers. Om Shanti.”

Visuals from the site showed parts of the aircraft damaged, with smoke reported from the runway area. Emergency services rushed to the spot, and all occupants were immediately evacuated. Pawar and others on board were taken to Baramati hospital for medical evaluation.
Officials said the exact cause of the incident and the extent of damage to the aircraft are yet to be ascertained. Authorities have launched an inquiry, and further details are awaited.
